Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is the most widely researched school-wide framework that consists of a continuum of tiered interventions to promote positive student outcomes. One of the core features of PBIS is to establish partnerships with families, students, and the community. This presentation provides a basic understanding of PBIS and shares resources developed by the Center on PBIS and related state projects to enhance collaboration across partners, especially those who support families in the community.

Why does it seem so hard to sustain school initiatives? When initial grant funding ends and champions move on, how do we keep systems like PBL strong in our buildings? This presentation will provide the latest research findings and practical strategies to overcome common barriers to sustaining effective school initiatives.

Many schools are implementing PBIS in efforts to improve outcomes for all students, especially to reduce exclusionary discipline for students from underserved groups. Although there is some research showing that schools implementing PBIS with fidelity have more equitable school discipline, eliminating disproportionality will likely require a specific equity focus. This presentation shares specific strategies and free resources for enhancing the cultural responsiveness of PBIS systems, and is intended for those with intermediate to advanced experience implementing PBIS in either elementary or secondary schools. 

Originally presented as part of the Community of Practice - Equity Series 2022, this presentation provides critical equity concepts and tasks that education leaders should be considering as they prepare their universal systems for the new school year.

Overview of creating supportive and positive classrooms

Extended school closures and distance learning have added intense stressors to the lives of educators, students, and their families. Being away from school means disruptions not only in academic learning but also the systems to support students’ social-emotional-behavioral development. This presentation will describe establishing and maintaining systems to keep education safe, predictable, and positive, in the wake of school closures, trauma, and distance learning.

This session will share results from three empirical studies examining school and district predictors of sustained implementation of school-wide positive behavioral interventions and supports (SWPBIS). Participants will learn about the speed of reaching adequate implementation, elements of technical assistance that influence implementation, and predictors of re-adoption after abandonment.
